From Mask to Rupture: Oraczewski’s Current Practice

In Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski’s recent work, the mask has become a site of transformation rather than a stable symbol.

Earlier works approached the mask through archetype, role and the tension between the presented self and the concealed interior. The newest works push that structure further. The image begins to split. Surfaces crack, contours separate and the mask ceases to function as a complete façade.

Beyond representation

This rupture does not simply reveal another identity underneath. Instead, it opens the work toward something less defined: presence before role, form before fixed meaning, and an image in the process of becoming or disappearing.

The development remains consistent with Oraczewski’s broader practice. Across painting, relief and installation, he has repeatedly worked through collision: light and shadow, surface and depth, order and disruption, visibility and concealment. The broken mask extends this language into a new phase, where the boundary itself becomes unstable.

The current works form part of an active practice rather than a retrospective return to a historical motif. They connect Oraczewski’s established visual language with his ongoing presentations in Venice and the international programme developed through ORAC Gallery and A Space Gallery.
