The Scourged
Period
1997–2022
Format
245 × 122 cm
Media
Charcoal / acrylic
Some images in Oraczewski’s work invite layered interpretation. The Scourged is deliberately more direct. Deep black dominates; restrained interventions of red sharpen the emotional force of the surface. The paintings confront suffering, violence and the violation of dignity without allowing the viewer to escape into purely formal admiration.
The portfolio includes large-format works dated 2022. The title also invokes a longer visual history of scourging and innocent suffering, but the urgency of the images remains contemporary. Their severity forms a counterpoint to the artist’s affirmations of freedom and human potential. Here, painterly restraint is not an absence of feeling: it is a way of refusing to soften what must be faced.
