In Reliefs, the surface refuses to behave like a flat support. Raised structures establish a physical rhythm beneath layers of paint; their contours continue to be felt even where colour and texture partly conceal them. The work holds two times together: the making of an underlying form and the later actions that transform its appearance.
Paintings dated 2005, including Relief with Light, reveal how this method joins questions of matter to the artist’s interest in signs and memory. The museum catalogue also situates relief within his exploration of myth and symbolic fragments. Here, meaning is not only depicted. It is built into the surface, where the persistence of a form becomes visible through touch, shadow and changing light.
