Own technique
Matters places the physical substance of painting at the centre of experience. In works such as Deterrent, Landscape with Wing and In Motion, dense texture, abrasion and relief register movement before it resolves into a figure or landscape. The artist’s own technique makes the surface an active field rather than a transparent window.
Representative paintings from the 1980s and early 1990s show concerns that continue throughout Oraczewski’s practice: the friction between an imagined form and the material through which it becomes visible. Their imagery is not separate from their making. Colour, thickness and gesture carry memory and resistance, asking the viewer to approach the work physically as well as symbolically.
