Figures
The human figure is one of the central subjects of Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski’s painting. In Figures, the body appears less as a portrait than as a threshold between material presence and inner experience. Early works from 1984 reduce the figure to a narrow, almost archetypal silhouette. The slender 2013 paintings extend this language through layered colour and gesture. By 2022, the figure may dissolve into a dark trace or emerge as a forceful red presence. These works reflect the artist’s conviction that a person cannot be contained in one fixed image. A documented selection from the Figures series is reproduced in the 2023 catalogue published by the National Museum in Kielce.
