A mask usually promises to give a face a recognizable identity. In Broken Masks (2026), Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski tests what happens when that promise fails. The surface splits and shifts; fragments of a face remain visible, but no single image can contain the person behind it. Rupture becomes an opening rather than a simple image of damage.
The works extend the artist’s earlier investigations of disguise, self-presentation and inner life. Developed in the context of MINORIA: The Shape of Breath in Venice, the series makes light, colour and the physical structure of paint participants in this transformation. Identity emerges here as something experienced over time, not captured once and for all.
